The Mayflower Cafe in Sydney has officially launched

Situated in the heart of Darlinghurst was once a renowned Art Deco Florist in the 90s. Now with the help of a strong team of designers, creatives and tradesmen, the space has been transformed into The Mayflower, a lush cafe serving the finest selection of quality coffee and caviar.

At Don de L’Amour we had the opportunity to be part of this transformational project, working with carefully selected preserved floral varieties to uplift the space and provide a unique experience to The Mayflower customers and patrons. Across the two-level cafe, we worked to produce five floral installations over three weeks. With our continuous efforts to remain as environmentally-friendly as possible, we intentionally constructed each installation using wire and free from any use of floral foam.

The process began in the middle of May where we sourced over 250 bunches of fresh Amaranthus. We prepared and conditioned each stem to begin the preservation process, which required over three weeks to complete. Although labour-intensive, this process was but absolutely necessary to ensure that the flowers were preserved with the utmost quality. In addition to the use of Amaranthus, we incorporated asparagus fern, and native templetonia.

With a background in art and fashion, you’ll often see the use of mixed medium within our designs. We drew inspiration from textiles present with coffee and the sea when we incorporated natural hessian fabric and rope throughout all abstract floral sculptures.

Layers were suspended from the ceiling in waves, pouring out from the florals and weaved throughout the cafe.
