Creative Director and Artist Amy Thai and the Don de L'Amour Team unveils ‘Remnants: The Capsule’ in Suzhou, China, an otherworldly botanical installation that continues her acclaimed Remnants series, previously featured in The New York Times. This latest work showcases Thai’s unique multidisciplinary skills as both a sculptor and botanical artist, embodying her deep connection to organic forms and her ability to translate them into immersive spatial experiences.
The capsule’s exterior is cloaked in a vivid tapestry of preserved purple, fuchsia, and pink blooms—smokebush, ming ferns, rice flowers, and statice—suggesting a spacecraft overtaken by the relentless beauty of nature. Two hundred air plants sprout across its surface, softening its industrial frame with an ephemeral sense of movement and life. The juxtaposition of metal and flowers creates a striking narrative: a vision of nature reclaiming the manufactured, transcending time and space.
Stepping inside the capsule, viewers encounter a cavernous interior lined with velvety moss, creating an organic, cave-like environment. Thai’s sculptural sensibilities are evident here, with the interior’s natural undulations evoking the fluidity of forms shaped by centuries of geological forces. The space glows with light projections mimicking bioluminescent glow worms, while a mirrored floor expands the environment infinitely, enveloping audiences in an otherworldly atmosphere that feels alive and boundless.
This installation highlights Thai’s unparalleled ability to balance precision and spontaneity, drawing from her background in marble sculpture to achieve structural integrity while imbuing her work with natural sensibilities. The capsule, both futuristic and ancient, explores humanity’s evolving relationship with the natural world—a recurring theme in the Remnants series. By integrating botanical art and sculpture, Thai crafts a dialogue between permanence and ephemerality.
Remnants: The Capsule invites audiences into a space where the human-made and the organic blend seamlessly. This poetic meditation on nature’s resilience and beauty underscores Thai’s vision of a future where the natural world reclaims its central place in existence, inspiring awe, reflection, and reconnection.
‘Remnants: The Capsule’ will be on display between Louis Vuitton and Cartier at MATRO Luxury Mall from 12 December 2024 - 16 February 2025.
